Cassava industry targets export value of 2 billion USD by 2030

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has just approved the Project 'Sustainable development of cassava industry to 2030, vision to 2050' with the target of exporting 1.8 - 2 billion USD by 2030; the approval of the Project is assessed to be consistent with the Strategy for sustainable agricultural and rural development for the period 2021 - 2030, vision to 2050; Strategy for crop development to 2030, vision to 2050. In addition, it is also consistent with the natural, economic and social conditions of each locality, focusing on land conditions, crop structure orientation... to meet market demand, improve production efficiency.

The Project will contribute to promoting the application of science and technology in the production and processing of cassava; promote deep processing, diversify products to meet market demands; maximize the use of by-products in the cassava production and processing process.

In addition, develop production according to the value chain, closely link cassava production and consumption. From there, encourage and mobilize resources from economic sectors to invest in production, processing and export of cassava products. The State creates mechanisms, policies and investment, supports investment according to the provisions of law.

The target by 2030 is that the country's fresh cassava output will reach about 11.5 - 12.5 million tons, of which the fresh cassava output used for deep processing of some products (starch, ethanol, MSG...) accounts for about 85%. The cassava growing area using varieties that meet quality standards will reach 40 - 50%. The cassava growing area applying sustainable farming processes will reach 50%. The export turnover of cassava and cassava products will reach 1.8 - 2 billion USD.

Vision to 2050, Vietnam's cassava industry continues to develop sustainably, 70 - 80% of cassava growing area applies sustainable farming processes, fresh cassava output used for deep processing of some products (starch, ethanol, MSG...) accounts for over 90%, export turnover of cassava and cassava products reaches about 2.3 - 2.5 billion USD.

Regarding production, by 2030, the cassava growing area nationwide will be about 480 - 510 thousand hectares, fresh root output will reach 11.5 - 12.5 million tons.

Regarding processing, continue to encourage economic sectors to invest in building new or upgrading processing plants; and encourage the development of processing enterprises using cassava and cassava starch as raw materials.

Prioritize the use of new technology, advanced technology in cassava processing to improve quality, maximize the use of by-products, and protect the environment.

Research, develop, perfect and transfer into practice technical processes for sustainable cassava production in ecological regions; promote the application of mechanization in the stages of planting, caring, harvesting, transporting cassava...

In addition, research, manufacture or import new technologies in processing, diversifying cassava products. At the same time, synchronously implement scientific and technological solutions in processing cassava products to improve product quality, economic efficiency, and environmental protection.

Regarding market solutions for cassava products, from an international perspective, solutions are needed to maintain the existing cassava consumption market (China, Korea...). At the same time, promote trade promotion activities, expand markets (EU, Northeast Asia...), remove trade barriers to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese cassava products to be widely consumed in the world market.

Domestically, in addition to encouraging the development of enterprises processing cassava products, localities need to continue to attract enterprises processing confectionery, glucose syrup, instant noodles, animal feed... to use cassava and cassava starch as raw materials to increase the value chain of the cassava industry.
